War in Ukraine: the United States on the verge of crossing “the red line” with a new delivery of missile launchers to the army of Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to call for help from the international community on the need to provide him with weapons to defend himself against the Russian army. The Americans could deliver to the Ukrainian army multiple rocket launchers, called MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System). But this new arms transfer could have serious consequences.

“Some partners avoid giving necessary weapons for fear of escalation. Escalation, really? Russia is already using the heaviest non-nuclear weapons, burning people alive. Maybe it’s time […] to give us MLRS (multiple rocket launchers)?” tweeted Mykhaïlo Podoliak, adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, on Friday.

CNN claims, citing “several managers“, that the American administration is indeed considering a military aid plan which would include the sending of these MLRS. According to our colleagues, the announcement of the plan could fall next week.

The US administration of President Joe Biden would in any case have approved the sending of several rocket launcher systems to Ukraine, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing US officials.
difficult to predict what the American decision will be or what the Russian reaction could be to a possible sending of MLRS.

The US will send HIMARS to Kyiv, likely loaded with M31 GMLRS rockets that each carry 200 lbs of explosives – slightly more than the 192 lb TNT equivalent in a Mk-82 500-lb bomb. By comparison, 155-mm artillery shells carry about 18 lbs of explosives each. https://t.co/yYdS85djl9

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby did not confirm the existence of the project and limited himself to stating that “We remain committed to helping them prevail on the battlefield“, while rumors about the delivery of these rocket launchers multiply in the American press.

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has previously warned that the West’s militarization of Ukraine is a direct threat to European and global security.

“The US MLRS can launch shells over 500 kilometers. And if the #Americans do this, they will clearly cross a red line, and we will record an attempt to provoke a very harsh response from #Russia.” Olga skabeeva pic.twitter.com/xepeagD0CQ

In Russia, this announcement of a new delivery of weapons is also reacting. Olga Skabeeva, host of a very famous program on the Rossiya-1 channel (state television), claimed that if the Americans delivered this weapon, they “cross [aient] clearly a red line, and save us [i] We’re trying to provoke a very harsh response from Russia.

On the other hand, according to the American press, the Biden administration is hesitant because it fears that ATACMS missiles (those that can reach a range of 300 km) could be used by the Ukrainians to attack the Russians on their territory, which would complicate the American position in the conflict.

This Saturday, Moscow also delivered a show of force, announcing that it had successfully carried out a test firing of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile.
