ATHENS/LONDON (Reuters) – The United States has seized a shipment of Iranian oil aboard a vessel operated by a Russian shipowner off Greece and will ship it to its shores on another vessel, we learned from three sources familiar with the matter.
A source at Greece’s Navy Ministry said on Thursday that the US Justice Department had “informed Greece that the ship’s cargo was Iranian oil.”
“The cargo was transferred to another ship chartered by the United States,” the source said, without providing further details.
Last month, Greek authorities seized an Iranian-flagged ship, the Pegas, with 19 Russian crew members on board, near the southern island of Evia, as part of sanctions imposed on Russia by the ‘European Union.
The ship was eventually released due to confusion over the penalties imposed on its owners.
