Toxic pesticides: which fruits and vegetables are the most contaminated? Discover the ranking

Residues were found in 22% of the samples studied in France, i.e. just over 1 in 5.

Pesticide Action Network is an NGO, a real network of more than 600 non-governmental organizations in 90 different countries, which fights against the use of pesticides dangerous and for their replacement “through ecologically rational and socially just alternatives”.

PAN International thus published a report on Tuesday in which it is affirmed that the presence of toxic pesticides in the fruits grown in European Union countries literally exploded between 2011 and 2019. The study in question analyzed 97,170 samples. And reveals a 53% increase in contaminated samples in the space of 9 years. With nearly one in three fruit samples containing pesticide residues in 2019.

According to the study, the fruits the most contaminated were the blackberries (51% of the samples contaminated), the peaches (45%), the strawberries (38%), the cherries (35%), and the apricots (35%). In addition, almost a third (31%) of apples were contaminated, an increase of 117%.

Side vegetablesa 19% increase in contaminated samples was recorded compared to 2011. The most contaminated vegetables are celery (54%), followed by turnips (45%) and kale (31%).

The champion countries of contamination are the Belgium (34% of samples), theIreland (26%), the France (22%), theItaly (21%) and theGermany (20%). As the Cadena Ser reveals, theSpain does not appear in this ranking because it is one of the EU countries that analyzes the fewest food samples for the presence of pesticide residues.
