TotalEnergies: launch of a CO2 capture project in the United States

(AOF) – TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with Sempra Infrastructure, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation for the development of the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project at the Cameron LNG site, a natural gas liquefaction and export terminal located in southwestern Louisiana, United States.

The HCS project aims to capture, transport and store carbon dioxide (CO2) mainly from Cameron LNG. The CO2 will be captured by the plant’s deacidification units, then dehydrated and compressed in order to be transported by gas pipeline about ten kilometers away.

It will then be stored permanently in a saline aquifer using a well capable of injecting up to two million tonnes of CO2 per year.

The HCS project had applied for a construction permit for such an injection well with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August 2021, and the acceptance of this application is a first in Louisiana. .
