In April, wild rabbits were allowed to roam freely on the lawns of the Invalides, as they are no longer considered pests. But since then, local residents have complained about the numerous damage caused by mammals.

In April 2022the animal protection associations were delighted: the wild rabbits at the Invalides were becoming protected ! But today, these small mammals are again at the heart of the turmoil, because they cause lots of damage around the Invalides, to the great despair of residents. Indeed, since they are no longer classified harmfulthey can reproduce as far as the eye can see and their number has increased in a month already.

The Invalides rabbits, considered the colony of rabbits the largest in the capital after that of the Bois de Boulogne, can no longer be killed, and can frolic freely on the lawns of the esplanade, after years of legal battle. Previously, prefectural decrees indicated that they were “likely to cause damage“, and authorized the soldiers of the Invalides to regulate and kill some”forty a year“.

If many passers-by find that the presence of rabbits is more cute and rustic than anything else, the residents of the district, which occupies nearly 16 hectares, are not of the same opinion. In the middle of town, rabbits cannot feed themselves as in the wild, and must content themselves with what they find, the roots of pretty pruned yews des Invalides, the flowers in the flowerbeds, the grass in the lawns…

Suffice to say that the lawn of the esplanade no longer looks the same, given the damage. Moreover, it is well known, rabbits reproduce a lot, with nearly six farrowings per year, i.e. about 30 rabbits, enough to make residents fear a true invasion in a few months…

After several years of legal battle, animal protection associations have obtained satisfaction. Faced with pressure, the Paris police headquarters decided to revoke its own decree concerning wild rabbits. Small mammals are no longer considered a “harmful” species and can therefore continue to roam freely on the lawns of the Esplanade des Invalides. [Lire la suite]
