Tesla drivers will now be able to play Steam games in their cars, with apparently “thousands” of games now available to play in specific models.
Tesla announced the news of Twitter, reveals that new Model S & X vehicles will now include Steam support. The video shows a pilot playing Cyberpunk 2077 in their car using a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. But since the video promises more general support for “wireless controllers,” it seems likely that a wide variety of controllers will work in a Tesla.
More information can be found in the release notes for the update, which suggests that any game compatible with Steam Deck will also be compatible with Tesla. Additionally, the cars will use Steam’s cloud sync feature, meaning they can continue to play from any other Steam-enabled device.
Additionally, the notes state that Steam compatibility is only available on Model S & X vehicles from 2022 onwards, and requires 6GB of DDR memory and Premium connectivity.
It is the fulfillment of a long-standing ambition for Tesla owner Elon Musk, who promised to make the company’s cars compatible with Steam in February of this year. The automaker has previously integrated video games into its vehicles, having already introduced a number of Atari titles before adding e.g. Cuphead and fallout shelter.
However, it will not be possible for Tesla drivers to play games on their vehicles while driving them. This somewhat important feature was added in 2021, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). carried out an investigation after fears it could cause accidents on the road. Following concerns from NHTSA, Tesla released a software update that disables its Passenger Play feature while the vehicle is in motion.
